I'm sure you've heard me tell the story of Lynn Ruth Miller being an important catalyst in starting my comedy career. At my very first official comedy music gig at the Hyena Theater in San Francisco, she was the MC.
She asked me to play guitar for her act. What act? Well, that would be me playing Anarchy in the UK by the Sex Pistols while she sang a parody about boobs and threw lingerie at the audience. How could I say no?
In 2005 Lynn Ruth invited me and a few other comedians to perform on a package show with her at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. It's the world's largest arts festival and most of it is comedy. It's an absolutely bonkers event and if you ever have the opportunity to go, definitely do so.
We had a tiny little black box theater. Lynn Ruth spent the whole month there and I came in for the final 2 weeks. Sure, we were sold out most nights. But that meant about 25 people. :) During the day Lynn Ruth hustled press (she was great at that) and we did some street performing. And we saw all the fantastic sights of Edinburgh.
We were kind of nuts to do it. Lynn Ruth was a little over 2 years into comedy. I was only about 18 months in. Neither of us was very good at it yet. :) I've come a long way since then. And Lynn Ruth became a force of nature on stage until she passed in 2021 at the age of 87. She was literally planning her next show from her hospital bed. We should all be that energetic.
But here it is... Straight from my personal archives... My set with Lynn Ruth and solo at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2005. Enjoy!
