Dug this one out of the archives for ya! If you've never been, Primm, NV lies right on the border of California and Nevada. There's literally a gas station nearby that has slot machines on one side and California lottery tickets on the other.
Primm is an odd place. It's for people who didn't want to drive 45 more minutes into Las Vegas? People who are uncomfortable with lots of choices? Not sure. But Primm has two casinos and that's enough for these folks.
I did 3 or 4 shows here that weekend that ranged from really good like this one to "Well, I guess I'll just go walk out into the desert and disappear" bad like the show right after this one.
Matt Gubser, who you see at the very beginning, was opening for me and it was his first time playing a casino. I remember him saying on the drive out there "I'm going to stick to what I do and do my smartest material." I said "Yeah, good luck with that."
And he bombed. But he learned a lot. And Matt is funny as hell now, so go find his work too.
The other thing I remember about these shows was after the 2nd (and worst) show on the 2nd night I jumped in my car and hightailed it into Vegas to catch Gogol Bordello doing a midnight show at Brooklyn Bowl. They were, of course, fantastic.
Enjoy!
